The UK is a Halal Food paradise compared to other European countries, but for some time now, there have been sporadic calls for the banning of halal slaughter in the country, with claims of it being so-called cruel and barbaric. Who is making these claims and should Muslims and Jews, who slaughter in a similar way, worry? Fareena Alam discusses with a panel of experts whether there is a backlash against Halal food.

Abdulhamid Evans has been an independent halal sector consultant for the past 12 years, founder of the HalalFocus news website and currently working on the annual World Halal Summit in 2016 in Kuala Lumpur.

Shazia Saleem is the founder of ieat foods – the UK’s first brand of quality halal ready meals sold in over 400 national supermarket branches. iEat is the largest ready meal brand launch by a start up in British history

Khalil Charles is a spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Britain and a jurist of Maliki and Shafii jurisprudence.

Dr. Adel Sabir is Chairman of the European Halal Development Agency, a halal industry scientist, with extensive experience in auditing and certification in the halal supply chain as well as advising scholars involved in this process.

How badly does the British media cover stories about Muslims. Quite badly, many would say. So, what are we doing about it? How well equipped are we to “tackle” negative media? And is this a losing battle? Our host Fareena Alam asks all these important question to a panel of experts disucssing Muslims in media coverage.

Dilly Hussain is the deputy editor of British Muslim news site 5Pillars. He is also a political blogger and freelance writer for a number of media outlets including the Huffington Post UK, Al Jazeera English, a columnist for the Middle East Eye, and freelance contributor for the Foreign Policy Journal and the Ceasefire Magazine.

Rehman Anwer is a Project Manager for Faith Matters UK and is involved in the organization’s national anti-Muslim hate crime project in Britain, Tell-MAMA (Measuring Anti-Muslim Attack).

Rahima Begum is a London based artist, activist and co-founder, director of international human rights organisation Restless Beings. She is also an influential and award-winning figure in the British Bangladeshi community. She is currently exhibiting a small collection of her art in London.

There are close to 2000 mosques in the United Kingdom. Do young Muslims love being in them, feel a sense of belonging or ownership over them? Or have our mosques failed them? Fareena discussing whether British mosques have failed the youth of today with an exceptional panel of experts.

Shaykha Safia Shahid embodies the rich tradition and history of female scholarship. She is a public speaker, teacher and was recently awarded a BISCA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Women’s Empowerment.

Faroukh Peru is a lecturer in Islamic Studies, Quranic Pholosophy and Sufism at the Mecca Institute. He is also the chairman of the Quranology Institute which focuses on the existential reading of the Quran.

Hassan Al Katib is a young documentary film-maker and former news correspondent, and has worked on a number of videos involving mosques and young people.

Sayid Muhammad Al-Mousawi is the head of the world Ahlul-Bayt Islamic League and President of Interfaith International, a non-governmental organisation connected to the United Nations.

Numerous laws have been passed by our government in a bid to counter terrorism and violent extremism. What are the ripple effects on our society? Have they affected you, your family or your friends even though you may not have done anything you thought was criminal? Do you know how they could affect you? Fareena raises all these important questions with a panel of experts.

Lena Mohamed is an advocate and researcher at the Islamic Human Rights Commission and looks at counter-terror legislation and its criminalisation of Muslim communities in the UK.

Dr. Ali Hussaini is the founder of the Muslim Youth Forum, which encourages the British Muslim youth to develop their humanitarian Islamic identity and to counter violent ideas attributed to Islam.

Ibtihal Bsis is a barrister and has extensive experience advising on counter terror laws and the Prevent policy. She has advised schools, mosques and Islamic institutions and trained other lawyers in this area.

Zarah Sultana is a student of Intenational Relations at the University of Birmingham and a committee member of the NUS Black Students’ Campaign.

Our Panel

Muneera Williams is a Rapper, Poet and Cultural Commentator, with considerable experience facilitating workshops amongst young people. She is one half of the hip-hop and spoken word duo Poetic Pilgrimage.

Abdulhamid Evans is an independent consultant in Halal market strategy, a writer, poet and musician who is widely travelled and has lived all over the world. He embraced Islam and joined the Norwich Muslim community in the late 70’s.

Asghar Cheraghzadeh is trained in psychoanalysisat the School of Jung inSweden. Asghar works in the creative arts industry but has devoted much of his adult life to researching human personal growth and happiness.

Ruhi Rizvi is founder of Project Zainab which works to support and empower families with their Islamic role in western society. She is also a Specialist community public health nursing practitioner working closely with young people, police and social services with over 25 years experience.

Hijab-wearing women are a demographic that has been virtually ignored for years by major brands and retailers. The recent feature of a hijabi model by one such retailer has provoked much debate and actually, quite a lot of excitement. It’s seen by many as a positive mainstreaming of the hijab into the fashion industry but is this a dangerous slippery slope? Fareena discusses the exciting topic of Muslim Fashion with a panel of experts, asking them whether hijab fashion industry has exploded in recent years and has it gone in a positive direction?

Shemiza Rashid is a former fashion designer and stylist, now a teacher of fashion and retail. Shemiza hosts modest fashion events such as Saverah Fashion weekend and Muslim Life style expo.

Asghar Cheraghzadeh, who sources and supplies clothing to numerous west end theatre houses and has more recently been commissioned to design and supply for a feature film.

Shahida Rahman is an award-winning author, writer and publisher. One of her many works is on The Integration of the Hijab into Police Uniforms and she is currently writing her second novel.

Nabila Fowles-gutierrez is a midwife, activist and musician, was involved in the Prohijab campaign to raise awareness and support Muslim women who choose to wear the hijab and continues to campaign to end Islamophobia and working towards cultural, religious and political inclusion.
