Background:
Hawai’i was a recognized independent nation prior to January 17, 1893. On that day, as some indigenous population claim, the Hawaiian government was illegally overthrown by the United States’ government. Since then, the US has assumed control over Hawaii turning the islands into Military Bases.
However, the United States claims that Hawaii was lawfully annexed as the 50th State.
Not long ago, the US government, under Bill Clinton administration, signed a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1993 which said that the US “acknowledges that the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii occurred with the active participation of agents and citizens of the United States and further acknowledges that the Native Hawaiian people never directly relinquished to the United States their claims to their inherent sovereignty as a people over their national lands, either through the Kingdom of Hawaii or through a plebiscite or referendum.” Many analysts believe that this statement highlights that even the US government accepts that this land was never actually relinquished to the United States.

In 1999 a group of indigenous Hawaiians reinstated a government pro tempore or more commonly known as for the time being and continue to implement steps to reinstate laws of the Hawaiian government to reclaim their sovereign independent status from the United States.
Synopsis
The documentary takes us on a journey to revisit the history and origins of Hawaii and its people. How they came to develop an independent civilization globally recognized until the overthrow of the monarchy and the illegal annexation by the United States in 1893.
The Hawaiians believe that during the first few decades of the 20th century the U.S. was devoted to overriding the native language, Hawaiian culture and replace it with tourism. All this as a mask to hide the true goal: to make Hawaii the most important military base of the American empire.
The U.S. claims she has legally annexed Hawaii as its 50th state. But there are many conflicting views when it comes to this. In 1993 President Bill Clinton signed a joint resolution of Congress in which he literally, “acknowledges that the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii occurred with the active participation of agents and citizens of the U.S., and also recognizes that Native Hawaiians never they gave up their sovereign rights and national people.”
Despite the crackdown, many sovereignist groups claimed independence in the mid 20th century. Since 1999, a particular group has been asked to form an alternative government that legislates and manages changes for native Hawaiians. The “Lawful Hawaiian Government” takes us inside its annual legislative convention called “Manukau Kanawai”. The “Lawful Hawaiian Government” enacts laws that despite not being recognized by the de facto U.S. government, are not just symbolic but in reality implemented by Hawaiian nationals.
The documentary takes us into the intimacy of the proclamation of new land for homeless families. Poverty is the common denominator of Native Hawaiians who are segregated and displaced by U.S. authorities. Outside Honolulu we see the reality and poverty in which thousands of Hawaiian citizens live.
But illegal encroachment is not only an economic problem for the inhabitants of the archipelago. Above them lives a constant threat: War. Hawaii is home to the Pacific Command, the most important stronghold of the U.S. Armed Forces. There deployed is an arsenal of nuclear weapons that puts Hawaii as the primary target in the event of a war. Hawaii has been used as a host and training ground, with the addition of uranium which has caused serious environmental damage.
The Hawaiian dream to be free from the U.S. They dream of a newly independent and sovereign nation, far from the threat of war. A future that offers peace of mind to new generations.
